A Professional Parenting Success Story: Tami and Jerald’s Journey
When Tami and Jerald first opened their hearts and home as professional parents to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), they weren’t entirely sure what to expect. What began as an earnest desire to help others soon blossomed into a life-changing experience for both them and the individuals they support. Through their partnership with RISE Services, Inc. Utah, Tami and Jerald discovered the joy of professional parenting and a truly supportive community.
A Life-Changing Decision
Tami and Jerald’s journey began after they realized they were unable to have children. Searching for a way to nurture, contribute, and make a difference, they initially turned to foster care. Little did they know, a suggestion from Tami’s brother would change their lives forever. He introduced them to professional parenting through RISE Services, Inc. Utah, a role that allows families to provide a home and care for individuals with IDD.
They jumped in, welcoming a 16-year-old girl who had daily seizures. “We were terrified at first,” Tami admits. “It was just the unknown.” Over time, they learned how to best support her, and they found a comfortable rhythm. “There were still hard moments and hard times, but it wasn’t so scary. She was a part of our family,” says Tami.
Their experience didn’t end with just one individual. Years later, Tami and Jerald received a call from Tami’s mother, who had spent nearly two decades caring for another individual with disabilities. She could no longer provide care for him and asked if they would help. They did and have been his professional parents for the last two years. “To us, it’s been a great blessing,” says Tami.
Comprehensive Support From RISE Utah
From the start, RISE Services, Inc. Utah has played a critical role in providing Tami and Jerald much-needed support.
Regular Training
Before beginning, they received training specific to the individual in their care. They also received comprehensive training on parenting, communication, first aid, supporting individuals with IDD, and other related topics. This continues every year.
Respite Care
Tami and Jerald especially appreciated RISE Service, Inc. Utah’s respite care. When professional parents need a break, there’s someone who steps in to provide short-term care. It’s a fun and fulfilling experience for each person involved.
Opportunity Centers
Tami and Jerald send the individual in their care regularly to one of RISE Service, Inc. Utah’s Opportunity Centers. Through these daily programs, each person can learn skills to build independence, foster community, and grow alongside others in a fun and welcoming environment. “They’re not just bored at home all day,” explains Tami. “That, to me, is the most life-changing thing of all.”
Learn More About Professional Parenting
When asked what it’s like to be a professional parent, Tami and Jerald don’t hesitate, “You’re contributing to someone’s life in a meaningful way. It’s a great opportunity to help and to grow.”
